James and Marley are progressing in their relationship. James is focusing every session on gaining more and more of Marley's trust. He is also working to develop the respect for his leadership and the understanding of pressure. Last week Marley learned the Three Areas of Understanding to develop basic ground manners and from there he was able to begin the process of establishing a stationary longe. It is so special to watch Marley go from a fearful to thinking state of mind. It is only after this change that he is able to learn. With more consistent time and a dedicated human partner he will gain the Attention, Trust, Respect, Understanding and Motivation (ATRUM) needed to obtain a relationship of willing cooperation.
We are excited that both the North West Observer and the Greensboro News and Record came out to watch Marley in action. We’ll keep you posted as to when his articles will be published.

Check out Marley's Page to see an overview of his first session with James. To see the full version of his session please join the Cooler Horsemanship Online Library. We will be updating his page often over the next few weeks leading up to his debut at the Oak Ridge Horse Show. Come see what he has learned and hear James explain how the psychology behind building a relationship of willing cooperation was applied to Marley's Horsemanship Experience.

We are very excited to get involved with a great organization right a round the corner from us!
Red Dog Farm is the private residence of Garland and Gary Graham, who founded Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network. Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue Network is a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to the rehabilitation, fostering and adoption of animals of all sizes.
James will begin this Wednesday working with Marley on a weekly basis. Marley is a young quarterhorse who was seized in a neglect case by the Danville Virginia Humane Society. We are looking forward to learning more about this adorable guy and will be tracking his progress through video and pictures. Stay tuned and visit both Marley's bio on the Red Dog Farm website and his page to keep up with his progress.
Please visit their website to learn more about this wonderful network and all the animals they currently have for adoption.

Snow Day at Fiore Farms!

Monday Night we attended the first of the 2010 Guilford County Extension Horse Management Short Courses at the Guilford County Agricultural Center. This week’s course was called First Time Horse Owner, but we found it covered topics that are important for even the most experienced horse owner. Many may already implement and understand good horse management, feeding, pasture and manure management, etc., but with horses we can never learn enough and it is always a good idea to talk with experts and learn how we can manage our horses to our best ability. This course will cover many informative topics over the next six weeks, including preventative health care, pre-purchase exams, first aid and emergency care, hoof care and corrective shoeing and laws and regulations for hauling horses on NC highways. So, if you live in our area please check it out and if you don’t look around for informative classes and/or knowledgeable horse specialists in your area.

The New Year has come with its fair share of challenging weather with most of the country experiencing lower temperatures then they have had in years. It is always hard to stay consistent in working with our horses in volatile weather. We need to remember to consider how their bodies are feeling during these times. Just as we get stiff and sore in damp cold weather and with time off from regular exercise, so do our horses. We recommend starting each session slow, allowing time for your horse and yourself to warm up. The Five Points of Communication are always a great place to start, but even more so when your horse is stiff. Lateral flexion, disengaging the hindquarters and yielding the horse’s front quarters will help loosen them up before asking for more movement as well as lower the risk of injury. Maintaining your basics is key to preparing your horse to move on to more advanced maneuvers once you are able to properly stay consistent in your sessions. Your horses will thank you for helping them do their stretches!

- After getting almost 5 inches of snow in our new hometown of Summerfield, NC has made us feel like we are back in MT. However, the sunny warmer weather we'll be getting all week should make up for it!
- The horses had a blast playing in the snow. Take a look at our video of the month!
- We are having a wonderful holiday season, and hope you all are too. We'll be back in full gear starting next year, and can't wait to bring you new information and videos. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone!!
That's all for now. Thanks everyone for staying in touch. We are working hard to streamline our program, and to get our initial videos up and online. Once we have started our video production, almost all of our updates will be coming to you via video. Also, we'll be working to find out how we can make our videos accessible via your phone! We hope everyone has a great week, and makes some progress in their relationship with their horse!
Sincerely,
Kate and James
