Trail Riding with your horse is an experience that can challenge and grow your horsemanship in ways that no other aspect of horsemanship can.  

Being in the elements of nature and without the safety and guidance of an arena is no small challenge for any horseman.

If a higher level and quality of experience with your horse is what you are seeking, then this event is designed for you.
James talks about the importance a strong foundation for a successful trail riding experience.
Event Information
Do you have a desire to improve your relationship with your horse?  Then this clinic is for YOU.  Although the focus is trail riding, all skills learned result in a better relationship with your horse, on the trail, in an arena or in your backyard.
James will cover topics such as:
  • Tips to improve responsiveness to cues on the trail
  • ​How to handle natural obstacles on the trail; logs, puddles, snakes.
  • ​Tips to improve the horse that needs to be in front or refuses to lead
  • ​Tips to control the horse that rushes home or kicks out at other horses
  • ​How to handle a spook
  • ​And more!
James Cooler has over 20 years of experience working with hundreds of horse of different ages, breeds, training levels and disciplines. His experience has taught him to recognize the subtle difference in each horse & rider and work with each team where they are at that moment to bring them forward in their horsemanship journey. James’ talent, skill and love of the horse can be seen in a variety of videos on YouTube. He participated in Road to the Horse Wild Card event in 2014 & 2015. Each session will be 2 hours in length with 3 participants.   Particpant fee is $120, which covers the session with James and the arena fee.  James is very skillful in working between multiple students while adjusting his teaching for the skill level of each horse and rider.  You will not be disappointed in his abilities to teach with passion and kindness for the horse and rider.

We will also reserve one session of 3 participants for riders’ choice; the topic can be anything from Liberty, speed control, lateral work, reining maneuvers or as basic as front and hind control.  James is knowledgeable and can instruct in any horsemanship area desired.  This session will need to be uniquely organized so please contact Raylin Patterson at Raylin30@gmail.com or 404-290-1810.

This clinic will be held in the large equestrian arena at Croft State Park a few miles from Spartanburg SC.  Croft State Park has 20+ miles of trail, 50 camp sites, large equestrian arena, 45 + Stalls, a lake and much more.  Campsite fees $30 - $35/ night and stall fees $12 - $14/ night are separate from the clinic fee and must be reserved by you directly on the Croft State Park website.  Come enjoy a weekend in a beautiful location and advance your horsemanship skills and partnership with your horse. Take advantage of those newly learned skills on the 20+ miles of trail. Act quickly, campsites do fill up as early as 3 weeks in advance.

If you plan to trailer in for only the day there is a large day parking area easily navigated with large trailers.  If you do not plan to camp and only come for the day, day admission to the Park is $3 adults; $1.50 SC seniors; $1 children age 6-15; age 5 & younger free to be paid upon arrival directly to the state park.
